Your Majesty...

Today, as you may or may not know, was International Tiara Day. Yes, it's true, another random "holiday" that most of the world laughs at and dismisses as stupid and unimportant. I on the other hand, believe it is a wonderful thing to celebrate, and yes, I did in fact sport my tiara in my apartment today for the occasion. I do believe that International Tiara Day should be about much more than just wearing a pretty tiara. The website I found says: "International Tiara Day celebrates women everywhere who have struggled to find their own path to success and have made it. It encourages women to listen to their heart and create the life they want. Real or virtual tiara-wearing is optional." It is organized by The Secret Order of the Tiara, a group that focuses on empowering women and celebrating their successes. Okay, okay, it might sound hokey but I am thinking that their mission has true merit.

Perhaps not all women wear real tiaras everyday, but in a way, don't we all wear one? Perhaps a tiara is more than a fancy headdress, but rather a symbol for women and our accomplishments. Now, I realize that many people might think this all sounds very archaic, very old fashioned, and that I am only trying to perpetuate the Princess and Prince Charming, Happily Ever After story, but that's not it at all. I am thinking about royal women who stood for something, women who truly wore a tiara but were strong in spirit, with real conviction, women who knew that making a difference in the world is about so much more than what family you are from, what your title may be or what you wear on your head. One example is Diana, Princess of Wales. I remember seeing Diana on TV and in magazines as a kid and thinking that she was one of the most beautiful women ever and then, being that she was a Princess, a real Princess, I was amazed! Aside from the royal wedding (ahhh, a dream....) and the tiara, Diana did her best to make a difference in the world by traveling to other countries, throwing her support behind various causes and speaking out. When in the public eye she was classy and graceful, showed qualities of a true royal princess, things that go far beyond the tiara on her head.

So today, International Tiara Day, let us celebrate the princess in all of us, the royalty of all women. Raise your glasses (pinkies up) to women-kind, to our class, our grace, our strength, our kindness, our beauty, both inside and out. Whether you wear the crown of a country, of corporate leadership, craftiness, cookie baking or cab driving, wear it proudly, each and every day. A true princess, always wears her tiara, whether it is visible to others or not. Don yours proudly; I definitely and royally do!
